Role of state-based action coalitions and how they help advance the goals specified in the IOM report

State-based action coalitions serve to create grassroots networks of regional stakeholders to bring about change at the state and municipal levels. State Action Coalitions were built to mobilize and convene stakeholders and constituents around the IOM report’s recommendations and messages. Initially formed state Action Coalitions were in Michigan, New York, New Jersey, California and Mississippi. In Idaho, the state action coalition is working to make advancements toward reaching the goal of having 80% BSN in the nursing workforce and analyzing the draft of the Idaho nursing strategic plan. Jenny Landen presented the plan of strategically creating community university and college partnerships offering the BSN program on community college campuses in the state. In order to advance the plan over the coming year, six workgroups were identified. This initiative advances the nursing profession by addressing nursing-related issues, including the preparation of a report on why Idaho needs a BSN-prepared workforce.
