The work of the Robert Wood Foundation Committee Initiative that led to the IOM report
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) discussed forming a partnership in 2008 to evaluate and address the need to change the nursing profession to meet the identified issues. When it comes to advancing health and medical care, nurses are at the forefront, spearheading several quality projects. Comprehensive, affordable family- and patient-centred care models run by nurses are gaining popularity (Institute of Medicine, 2011). As more nurses pursue postgraduate degrees and work to the best of their ability, they are collaborating in clinical practice with other members of multidisciplinary care teams and doing research and inquiry that may offer solutions to some persistent clinical issues.
Role of state-based action coalitions and how they help advance the goals specified in the IOM report
State-based action coalitions serve to create grassroots networks of regional stakeholders to bring about change at the state and municipal levels. State Action Coalitions were built to mobilize and convene stakeholders and constituents around the IOM report’s recommendations and messages. Initially formed state Action Coalitions were in Michigan, New York, New Jersey, California and Mississippi. They work to advance the goals specified in the IOM report at local and state levels through various actions, including improving access to care, promoting leadership, and transforming nurses’ education. For instance, some states have abolished legal restrictions on nurse practitioners working to the fullest degree of their training (Institute of Medicine, 2011). Idaho State Action Coalition Initiatives
The Idaho Nursing Action Coalition purposes to improve Idaho nurses’ ability to provide quality, affordable and accessible care and respond to future healthcare challenges. In Idaho, the state action coalition is working to make advancements toward reaching the goal of having 80% BSN in the nursing workforce and analyzing the draft of the Idaho nursing strategic plan. Jenny Landen presented the plan of strategically creating community university and college partnerships offering the BSN program on community college campuses in the state. In order to advance the plan over the coming year, six workgroups were identified. This initiative advances the nursing profession by addressing nursing-related issues, including the preparation of a report on why Idaho needs a BSN-prepared workforce. The second initiative involves nurses taking leadership roles in the recent insurance exchanges (Idaho Nursing Action Coalition, n.d.). Barriers to advancement in Idaho
Barriers to advancement that currently exist in Idaho include nursing shortage that is also at the national level. Idaho has experienced challenges in filling vacant positions following the high level of state nursing shortage. To enhance safe patient outcomes and staffing, more registered nurses are required across clinical settings. The increasing demand for caring and compassionate nursing care is contributed to by more people becoming old every day (The Idaho Nursing Workforce Center, 2018). Nursing advocates in Idaho overcome the nursing shortage by increasing the enrollment of individuals in nursing programs such as the ABSN program at the Idaho State University.
