A Staged Approach to Educating Nurses in Health Policy Assignment

Health Policy- Weekly Journal

In my professional practice, I have discovered health policy is increasingly gaining significance in nursing practice and education. Health policies are identified as principles that guide healthcare delivery. Health policies are either implemented at the state or national levels. Policies address different issues including tobacco control, maternal and infant health, and healthcare costs among others (Ellenbecker et al., 2017). A policy that has significantly impacted healthcare in the U.S is the 2010 affordable care act which has ensured that its American citizens access quality and affordable care through insurance coverage.  In health policy design and implementation, all stakeholders in healthcare should be incorporated including nurses as it has been identified that their participation in policy-making has not been embraced A Staged Approach to Educating Nurses in Health Policy Assignment.

In regards to health policy, I have identified I have a strength in policy design. As a result, I am a member of the policy development committee in my organization. However, when it comes to policy evaluation, I have identified that I perform poorly. To optimize patient outcomes, organizations should implement policies that improve service delivery. For example, organizations should encourage uninsured patients to enroll in health coverage programs that ensure they access quality and affordable care.

Leadership in health policy is vital, especially for nurse leaders. They must be involved in policy-making because their knowledge, skills, and experience can help inform legislators when developing or making changes to public policy. Additionally, nurse leaders are familiar with clinical workflows and processes, patient needs, and issues they might face during practices (Salvage and White, 2019). As such, their participation in public health must not be overlooked.
