Technology has reduced the number of medication errors. By reducing the number of mistakes that can be made, significant technological advancements in the healthcare industry have made it easier for nurses to provide safe and effective care. As a result of HIPAA’s privacy provision, all patient health information is protected against unauthorized access. Individual health information must be safe from cyber-attacks while allowing a more user-friendly and confidential flow of information to offer and promote high-quality healthcare and better patient outcomes (Girardi et al., 2020). HIPAA’s privacy rule safeguards the confidentiality of information by saying that an individual’s permission and consent must be sought first before accessing and sharing information. Health care providers, insurers, clearinghouses for health care information, and commercial partners are all included in the definition of “covered entities” for this privacy rule. HIPAA guarantees the confidentiality of the patients’ information in storage or while sharing. A penalty, termination, civil and monetary fines, and even criminal penalties may be issued if HIPAA is violated.

ANA laws require nurses to conform to ethical standards of care and to follow the guidelines established by the ANA. Ethical guidelines for nurses are established via the American Nurses Association (ANA) code of ethics. The ANA’s provision 3 promotes patient privacy rights by keeping medical records private. HIPAA’s rules include securing access to health insurance and protecting all forms of personally identifiable health information. Access to patient health information (PHI) should be protected by two-factor authentication, and those responsible for maintaining the privacy of patient records should be held accountable. Also included in the ANA Code of Ethics are eight additional guidelines on professional nursing principles and responsibilities.
