Introduction

Personal leadership philosophies are sentiments, beliefs and principles held by someone, and they act as a guide in executing their daily leadership duties. A leadership philosophy is a roadmap for ethical-decision making and behavior (Cusher & Menaldo, 2021). According to Broome and Marshall (2021), leaders represent the general image of their institution. Philosophies that promote self-improvement and the professional development of leaders and followers are crucial for the success of an organization. In this paper, I will describe my core values, mission and vision statement and analyze my Clifton Strengths Assessment results. Core values

Core values are values and beliefs with central importance in daily professional life and remain unchanged despite shifting conditions and goals. Therefore, they determine one’s actions and decisions (Bhardwaj, 2022). My core values are integrity and accountability. Integrity is honesty and possession of strong moral principles, while accountability is the willingness to accept responsibility for all actions. These are desirable core values for leaders because they promote the excellence and success of an organization (Cusher & Menaldo, 2021). Equally, accountability is fundamental in ensuring trust with stakeholders.

A personal mission and vision statement

Mission and vision statements express the motivation toward achieving organizational objectives. My mission is to ensure an optimal therapeutic relationship with patients and provide compassionate care. I seek to positively influence my followers through ethical practice and promote equitable access to healthcare services for patients. I envision giving quality leadership by mastering and embracing a team approach and innovativeness.

Analysis of my Clifton Strengths and Assessment

The Clifton Strengths Assessment web-based personal assessment tool allows one to identify personal strengths and work to strengthen them even more. According to my self-assessment using the tool, my five main strengths are being a maximizer, a futuristic, a strategic learner, and an achiever. Being futuristic means getting inspiration and being optimistic about what the future holds. Therefore, it can be an intuitive force driving one towards doing actions driving success. Being a maximizer means focusing on strengths to achieve the most from self and others, rather than being limited by weaknesses. Focusing on strengths opens new channels for excellence. As a strategic leader, one finds alternative solutions whenever faced with challenges. An achiever is industrious and gets satisfaction and pleasure from being busy and productive (Rath, 2007). As a lifelong learner, one pursues new opportunities to add value to self and others’ lives.

Two key behaviors I wish to strengthen

The first behavior I wish to strengthen is self-assurance. Carvalho et al. (2019) define self-assurance as the ability to express confidence and the will to take risks. One has an inner compass that provides certainty in the decisions one makes. Self-assurance can therefore help me initiate change and remain confident in succeeding. The second behavior I wish to strengthen is delegation of duties. At times, a leader can be overwhelmed in accomplishing all duties. Development plan to improve the identified behaviors

The first step towards improving in exercising delegation is the identification of the strengths of employees and assigning those duties conforming to their skillsets. I will use effective communication skills to alleviate anxiety and self-doubts among followers. I will also allow them to carry out duties autonomously. One of the steps I plan to take in relation to strengthening self-assurance is having frequent self-reflection and having a structured approach to making decisions. I can also identify key advisors to consult whenever I need to make important decisions.

 

Conclusion

Leadership philosophy encompasses beliefs and values driving one’s effort to achieve specific goals. Core values, vision and mission influence these principles. According to the Clifton Strengths Assessment, my strengths are being a maximizer, futuristic, strategic learner, and achiever. I would also wish to improve self-assurance and delegation skills.
