The DNP degree was developed to prepare APRNs, such as nurse practitioners, midwives clinical nurse specialists, for leadership in clinical practice. Due to the increasing complexity of care and the increased need for safe, effective, and quality care, there is a need for interprofessional, collaborative, and evidence-based care that is supported by expert clinical leadership by nurses. DNP degree nurses with providing crucial clinical leadership in various areas of expertise and scope to Master’s level trained APRNs (Dreher & Uribe, 2016). Thus, a DNP degree would improve the quality of training and care delivery by APRNs. Health care stands to gain from doctorate-educated practitioners because their responsibility includes support, coaching, and providing clinical leadership for other APRNs (McCauley et al.,2020 Voskuil, 2021). There is a need for APRNs capable of serving as flexible leaders, autonomous decision-makers, and independent providers (Carney, 2015). DNP programs provide such capabilities. As a result, DNP programs can be used as a justification for developing and implementing regulations that expand the roles and scope of APRNs. From this understanding, APRNs seeking the DNP can get a clue on questions regarding their practice in terms of setting and scope of practice. Thus, some of the questions that APRNs seeking the DNP can pose questions surrounding issues such as safe, effective, and quality care evidenced-based care, the capacity to deliver care in interprofessional/collaborative healthcare settings, provision of expert clinical leadership, and autonomy. Generally, regulation through legislation, certification, and accreditation, is likely to expand APRNs’ roles and scope of practice following increased transitions towards DNP programs.
