My Inappropriate Social Media Posts
After reviewing my social media posts, I have realized that I have often engaged in inappropriate posts that are not up to the nursing profession without my knowledge. For instance, on social media platforms that allow sharing of funny video clips, like Instagram and TikTok, I have occasionally shared funny clips of people falling when participating in different games. Such posts may seem funny and entertaining, but I had not considered the impact the fall may have had on the individual, such as fractures or an issue that may, later on, cause adverse effects to the patient, like intracranial bleeding.
Why Nurses Must Uphold Consistent Conduct Standards
Nurses must uphold consistent conduct standards that adhere to personal lives and work governing standards. According to O’Regan et al. (2018), the major healthcare professional standards nurses need to consider are clinical safety and proficiency. Such standards are essential in ensuring that healthcare organizations create a competency checklist that assesses nurses’ adherence to organizations’ rules and policies at an individual level. That means social media also can ruin a nurse’s reputation, especially if the healthcare organization double-checks a potential nursing employee’s social media as part of its governing standards. That means it would also be unethical for nurses to participate in health discussions on social media that may trick them into breaching patient confidentiality, thus violating HIPAA (Lefebvre et al., 2020). For instance, during Covid-19, there were so many health conversations going around that some people doubted the pandemic’s existence. In such a case, the nurse might have thought of posting a video of sick patients to prove to the public the need to take precautions. However, despite their good aim to the public, they will have breached the patient confidentiality and may even face legal charges Social Media Impact on Nurses Assignment.
Christian Values on Social Media Interactions
Respect for human dignity and value is some of the factors that nurses need to consider when interacting with others on the global platforms. Such dignity and values should be reinforced by Christian values like love and being compassionate about other social media users. Recently, many teenagers have been committing suicide, especially young girls, due to cyberbullying, which leads these teenagers to depressive states. For instance, due to stereotypes of an ideal woman’s beauty, any girl struggling with overweight and obesity issues is likely to face cyberbullying (Suciu, 2021). However, Christian values teach us that every individual was created in God’s image and that everything happens for a reason. Hence, regardless of the issues one might face, I learned always to be patient, compassionate, and caring to avoid complicating other people’s current situations and struggles.
Social Media Activities that needs Improvement
Maintaining professional boundaries is the main area of my social media interaction that requires quick change. That means I must first engage in critical thinking before posting or commenting on any social media post to avoid implicating my position as a healthcare provider and going against the nursing professional ethics.
Conclusion
Nursing professionalism and social media interactions is an aspect that healthcare providers need to consider daily. Some factors that require an evaluation are patient confidentiality and the social media post’s impact on other social media users. Also, by considering the Christian values of love and compassion, the nurses can improve their interaction on social media platforms.
