Week 8 Discussion: Reflection on AACN Essentials Informatics Self-Assessment

Nursing is a highly dynamic career, especially with changes in Health Information Technology (HIT). Thus, nurses must continuously improve their knowledge and skills to meet diverse patient healthcare needs. As a nurse, I should focus on improving my informatics knowledge. This discussion compares my AANC self-assessment score on week one and week 8.

In week 1, my AANC self-assessment score was 36. This score improved to 46 in week 8, indicating significant improvement in informatics competencies. Jouparinejad et al. (2020) defined nursing informatics as nurses’ knowledge, skills, and competition to collect, analyze, document, retrieve, process, and utilize electronically-sored information in nursing care. This competency includes simple clinical skills and complex application-based knowledge (Forman et al., 2020). I will apply the acquired information to continue improving my informatics knowledge in nursing practice. I will use the knowledge acquired during the program on literature search to look for information on how to improve my nursing informatics competencies from reliable sources, including nursing databases and peer-reviewed journal articles. Additionally, I will rely on course materials to improve my nursing informatics skills and knowledge. I will apply the evidence gathered from these sources to improve my informatics knowledge and skills further. According to Jouparinejad et al. (2020), equipping nurses with informatics competency forms the basis of providing quality and safe patient care. Therefore, I will use nursing informatics skills and competence to make better clinical decisions during care delivery, improving patient care and health outcomes Reflection on AACN Essentials Informatics Self-Assessment Assignment Discussion .

Week1 discussion

I scored 36 from the AACN Essentials self-Assessment, which describes my knowledge as very good.  Nursing is a very evolving career meaning that as a nurse I am seeking knew knowledge every day; it is even very applicable with the introduction of informatics and technology in the healthcare system.  It is with that same mindset that  Hebda & al state that information is an important part of the healthcare ( Hebda, T., Hunter, K., & Czar, P. ,2019, P.3).  Therefore it is essential to learn the tools of informatics and how to incorporate them in the patient care to optimize patient’s safety and outcome. For example, the use of the EMAR and the medication barcode and scanning system has significantly decreased medication errors. According to Glassman, “The informatics competency helps nurses use information and technology to communicate, manage knowledge, mitigate error, and support decision-making at the point of care” (Glassman, K. S., 2017, p. 45).   New systems, policies, and procedures are introduced often in healthcare which require new education and training.  This is to say that we are not sufficient when talking about knowledge. We learn new things every day.  I use Lippincott system to learn; nursing web like ANA for more knowledge.  I need improvement in technologies information systems and communication devices that support safe nursing practice. Though the integration of technology within the healthcare system has improved patients’ outcome it is important to highlight that reliance on the technology has dramatically increased and this is the case with me. I barely manually check my vital signs today; I use the automatic system which can be wrong sometimes Reflection on AACN Essentials Informatics Self-Assessment Assignment Discussion .
