Assessment Of Obesity, Presumed And Proven Causes And Prevention Strategies Essay
Health Assessment
Describe the contemporary issue and explain what external stressors are associated with this issue.
Obesity is an issue of concern among adolescent population as about 17% of children in the USA are obese. The concern is that obesity affects every aspect of life to include physical and psychological wellbeing. In addition, obesity is associated with other medical conditions to result in morbid outcomes. Consequently, the occurrence of morbidity links to depression, poor self-esteem, sleep apnea, diabetes, hyperlipidemia and hypertension. If the obesity is left unaddressed, then the child is likely to suffer digestive and cardiovascular diseases as an adult (Sanyaolu et al., 2019)Assessment Of Obesity, Presumed And Proven Causes And Prevention Strategies Essay.
Obesity is defined as body mass index (BMI) equaling or exceeding 95th percentile for age and gender. Although it is largely caused by genetics and some disorders, obesity incidences among adolescents are mainly caused by consuming more calories than what they need for physical activity, and lack of physical activity (Selekman, Shannon & Yonkaitis, 2019).

The occurrence of obesity is associated with stress and physical activity. In fact, stress positively and significantly correlates with obesity such that high stress levels is associated with higher incidences of obesity while low stress levels is associated with low incidences of obesity. In addition, physical activity is associated with obesity prevalence since a sedentary lifestyle is associated with high obesity incidences while a physically active lifestyle is associated with low incidences of obesity (Roy et al., 2021).
Outline assessment strategies to screen for this issue and external stressors during an assessment for an adolescent patient.
The assessment for screening obesity can be conducted using BMI, other anthropometric methods, and skin fold clippers to measure body fat percentage. BMI method takes a measure of the weight relative to the height to present an index {BMI = kg/ m2} that is related to excess body fat although not a direct measure of fat. BMI exceeding 29.9 is considered obese. Other anthropometric methods include waist circumference, hip circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, waist-to-height ratio, and skin fold fat thickness (pinch test). In addition to the anthropometric methods, obesity is determined using bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA), dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), Computerized Axial Tomography Scan (CAT scan), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Ultra sound, near-infrared interactance, body density, body volume, and isotope labelled water (Uzogara, 2016) Assessment Of Obesity, Presumed And Proven Causes And Prevention Strategies Essay.
Describe what additional assessment questions you would need to ask and define the ethical parameters regarding what you can and cannot share with the parent or guardian.
Other than the screening, questions can be asked about the individual’s lifestyle. The questions look at the eating habits, food intake, psychological wellbeing presence of stress), and physical activity (Selekman, Shannon & Yonkaitis, 2019).
Discuss support options for adolescents encountering external stressors. Include specific support options for the contemporary issue you presented.
To prevent obesity and address obesity among adolescents, the focus should be placed primarily on factors that affect physical activity and food intake. This includes ensuring that the adolescent engages in adequate physical activity and eats regular healthy meals. In addition, the calorie intake should match the physical activity so that no excess calories are left and stored in the body as fat. Besides that, the adolescent’s psychological health should be assessed and appropriate care provided to avoid stress (Selekman, Shannon & Yonkaitis, 2019).
