I work in an acute care hospital in a pediatrics unit. In collaboration with my preceptor, I assessed the organization for resources needed to implement the strategic plan if the change proposal is approved for the next phases. My preceptor highlighted the need for a clear and concise project plan, a detailed budget, a schedule of milestones, a clear understanding of the project deliverables, a team of competent individuals to help with the project, and comprehensive and accurate documentation. A review of my strategic plan revealed that I would need more resources for project implementation Capstone Change Project Resources Assignment.
The resources needed to implement the capstone project on education and prevention of COVID-19 in the pediatric unit would include:
- Educational resources on COVID-19 prevention for pediatric staff and patients: The educational resources on COVID-19 prevention for pediatric staff and patients would include: printed educational materials, online resources, and educational sessions. Dayagbil et al. (2021) recommend including technology in educational programs among the school-aged children to facilitate learning.
- Research resources on COVID-19 prevention for pediatric staff and patients: The research resources on COVID-19 prevention for pediatric staff and patients would include: journal articles, book chapters, and conference presentations. According to Efendi et al., the nurse should use available resources to foster learning and best outcomes for pediatric patients during admission and
- Materials to support patient and staff education on COVID-19 prevention, such as posters, leaflets, and educational videos
- Tools and resources to measure COVID-19 prevention progress: The tools and resources to measure COVID-19 prevention progress would include: patient and caregiver questionnaires.
In summary, it is helpful to clearly understand project resources before executing a plan to help achieve success. A capstone project may be difficult or impossible to complete if key resources are not readily available.

PICOT question paper
P: School-aged pediatric population
I: Health education
C: No health education
O: Alleviating the burden of COVID-19 among school-aged children and in the general population.
T: 3 Months
PICOT QUESTION: Among school aged pediatric population, will the provision of health education compared to no health education alleviate the burden of COVID-19 among school-aged children and in the general population in a period of 3 months?
The clinical problem that is bothering healthcare facilities is the steady influx of pediatric school aged children who are admitted due to COVID-19 related symptoms. School aged children represent a special category that is highly susceptible to the disease due to their close contact with one another which increases the risk of transmission through mucous or saliva (Cascella et al., 2022). Besides, the school aged children have weak immunity because their immunity is underdeveloped. Besides, the children interact intensively with other members of the community including the most vulnerable groups such as the elderly further exposing them to the disease.
Evidence-Based Solution
The evidence-based intervention that is effective in alleviating the burden of COVID-19 among school-aged children and in the general population would be to implement health education to create awareness of the dangers of COVID-19 and ways of preventing its spread. One of the factors that increase the rate of spread of COVID-19 among school going children is the fact that they interact significantly with one another because of the close proximity to one another and the lack of information among school-going children on health education (Zar et al., 2020). There are several programs that have been designed for adults and teenagers, but little has been done for the school-going children. Health education among school- aged children will be essential because the children will learn of some of the health practices that they can follow to prevent the spread of the disease. Some children for instance unaware of the dangers of COVID-19 may collect used masks and still use them without knowing of the dangers they pause.
Nursing Intervention
Health education is an essential tool in healthcare that can be utilized by nurses to disseminate the role of the patients in the management of their health issues. Patient health education requires that nurses initiate and ensure capacity building among school aged children to allow them to understand some of the perspectives of COVID-19 that they may not be aware of (Gray et al., 2020). Most of the school aged children may not be aware of their role in the management and control of COVID-19. For instance, the pediatric population should be taught on how, when, and why they need to adjust their lifestyles to curb the spread of the infection. The pediatric population need to be informed of the dangers COVID- 19 poses not only to their individual health but also to those of their loved ones including their parents and siblings. Nurses being close to the patients, they can spend their time educating the children on effective COVID-19 prevention strategies.
Patient Care
With the effects of COVID-19, the disease can cause severe patient suffering from several side effects such as multiple organ failure, tiredness, fever, cough and the loss of smell and taste (Fotuhi et al., 2020). These effects can affect the mental status of the pediatric population due to limited participation in day-to-day activities while hospitalized. These effects can affect the ability of the pediatric patients to participate in their education or even lead to more life-threatening conditions including damage to the breathing system. The nurses play a significant role in patient care in terms of COVID-19 prevention, and it should be the nurse’s priority in preventing patient suffering by implementing effective treatment plans for the patients Capstone Change Project Resources Assignment.
Health Care Agency
Several healthcare organizations and agencies have greatly suffered due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus. Since the outbreak of the infection, COVID- 19 has remained one of the most hospital acquired infection due to its ability to spread within the healthcare population. The healthcare team such as nurses remain the top spreaders of the infection and this has hindered the provision of effective healthcare services. After the outbreak of the infection, there was recorded a decline in hospital visitation by many patients due to the fears of contracting the disease (Barten et al., 2020). Besides, ravaging many healthcare institutions, the infection has negatively impacted the cost of patient care.
Nursing Practice
Besides affecting patient care, COVID-19 affects the nursing practice in various dimensions. Due to likelihood of contracting the infection from patients, there has been a change in nursing practice to help minimize the possibility of spread of the infection. One of the nursing practices that has been essential in curbing the spread of the infection is the use of preventive face masks, social distancing, and the use telehealth to minimize the interaction with patients (Cinar et al., 2020). The nursing practices should always focus on improving patient outcomes including infection prevention.

Strategic Plan Summary
Covid-19 is a debilitating health issue across all populations. As a healthcare provider, it is important to be aware of the risks that this virus poses to children and have a plan to protect them (Gray et al., 2020). The virus is very contagious and can be spread easily through contact with respiratory secretions. This paper will outline a strategic plan defining how the nursing practice intervention (NPI) will be implemented in my capstone project change proposal.
Organizational Culture and Potential Challenges
The culture at Memorial Hermann Healthcare (MH) is one of care and compassion for the patients and their families. The healthcare professionals at MH are dedicated to providing quality care to all patients. However, implementing an NPI targeted at the prevention and education of Covid-19 may be difficult due to the cultural beliefs of the nurses at MH. Some challenges that could occur when implementing the NPIs include resistance from some members of the healthcare team and a lack of knowledge among the nurses about Covid-19. However, with the support of the preceptor, nurses at MH can successfully implement the NPI to prevent and educate the pediatric/school-aged population about this deadly virus Capstone Change Project Resources Assignment.
Strategic Plan
The first step in implementing any nursing practice intervention is to assess the needs of the population affected by the intervention. This case of COVID-19 includes identifying the number of school-aged children at risk for contracting the virus and the number of children who have already contracted the virus. Once the population’s needs have been identified, a plan for implementing the nursing practice intervention must be developed. The nursing intervention would include distributing educational resources to school-aged children and their parents (Viner et al., 2020). The nurses would be offered continued education and updated information about the disease. These resources will include information about COVID-19 and how to prevent its spread.
Although implementing the nursing practice intervention will be challenging, it is important that it is done in a way that is respectful of the organizational culture and pediatric population. This population may resist change, and it will be important to consider any resistance before implementing the intervention. Considering the nurses’ attitudes and perspectives regarding these nursing interventions is also a prerequisite. A follow-up study will be necessary to assess the long-term effects of the nursing practice intervention on the school-aged/pediatric population at MH.
