How Transformational Leaders Boost Innovation in Staff
Transformational leadership is a style of leadership whose fundamental tenet is changing the psychology and perspective of followers to that of a leader. A leader plans, organizes, controls, and directs how organizational resources are to be utilized to accomplish set goals and objectives. In the traditional sense, followers are akin to drones tasked with taking instructions from leaders and implementing them strictly according to protocol. Transformational leaders provide wiggle room, so to speak, as to how instructions are translated to results (Masood & Afsar, 2017)Discussion: How Transformational Leaders Boost Innovation In Staff.

Transformational leaders encourage open communication, see individual staff as unique entities, respect independence and autonomy of staff, delegate tasks, welcome feedback, and provide mentorship and leadership opportunities to staff (Collins et al, 2020). These actions expose staff to a different perspective and from this, they learn how to assess and respond to situations as a leader would (Gashema, 2021). Where one person, the leader would be coming up with solutions, there is as large a pool of possible solutions as the number of staff where transformational leadership is employed. Rather than wait for instructions on the action to take, each staff member will have analyzed the case from their unique perspective and have come up with a possible solution, which they share. It is unlikely that all the provided solutions are valid in applicability. However, some of them will be more effective than conventional solutions or address a concern the leaders were hitherto unaware of.
Transformational leaders also create healthy vibrant workplaces by encouraging open communication. This encourages the exchange of ideas among staff. The free flow of ideas and flexibility in implementing solutions facilitate innovation. Given, there are situations in healthcare provision where instructions must be strictly implemented just as there are numerous opportunities for innovation. It is in the latter where the impact of transformational leadership is evident.
