Discussion 2 Week 4 Response

Reply to India Jackson

An excellent response. The discussion is critical in evaluating the ethical considerations of all nurses in preventing harm to patients, promoting human dignity, and supporting patients’ right to self-determination. In addition, the response reflects the nurses as having a vital role in protecting the privacy and upholding the confidentiality of patients. According to White et al. (2019), the discussion is clear that these obligations about safeguarding the rights of patients are not only directed to the experienced nurse practitioners but also to the new nurses. In addition, even the nurses who are assigned translation roles, and researcher nurses have equal obligations to safeguard the right of patients and can be held responsible if they violate the ethical practices. The response shows that the practice developed includes creating an education packet about hypertensive disorders of pregnancy concerning obstetric department staff (Wilkerson, 2019) Hypertensive Disorders Of Pregnancy Essay Discussion Response.

However, the author is significant in observing that the discussion does not meet critical institutional review board approvals due to failure to meet several criteria. For instance, the activity fails to produce an improvement in care or safety that can be sustained over time. Also, the issue with this activity is that it involves some randomized interventions and also the activity presents solutions that pose risks bigger than those presented by routine clinical care. Also, the discussion poses an important question about whether the study team members will have an access to clinical records or identifiable research in connection to the project. Overall, the author actively responds by mentioning his obligation as a nurse to adhere to the laid down American nurses association (ANA) codes of ethics (American Nurses Association, 2015). Important parts of the codes of ethics mentioned in the response include section 3.4 concerning patients’ protection and safety regarding questionable practice (American Nurses Association, 2015). The response is superb as the nurse has full support from the obstetric department and the chief nursing officer and also the project supervisor Hypertensive Disorders Of Pregnancy Essay Discussion Response.

Practice Change: Improve the Recognition and Response to Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy Through Education

All nurses are ethically obliged to prevent harm, promote human dignity, support the right to self-determination, and protect privacy and confidentiality (White et al., 2019). White et al. (2019) also note the obligations are just as binding for a new nurse as they are for an experienced nurse AND just as binding for a nurse engaged in translation as they are for a nurse conducting research. For my practice change, I created an education packet on hypertensive disorders of pregnancy for the obstetric department staff. The education does not require an Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval as it does not meet the following criteria:

The activity has objectives other than producing an improvement in safety or care that will be sustained over time.
The activity involves a randomized intervention or
The activity involves an intervention that poses risks greater than those presented by routine clinical care.
Will the PI or any study team member access identifiable research or clinical records in connection with this project.

However, as a nurse, I am obligated to follow the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics and the one that sticks out the most to me for my project is 3.4 Protection of Patient Health and Safety by Acting on Questionable Practice (American Nurses Association [ANA], 2015, 3.4 section). I am fortunate to have the full support of the Chief Nursing Officer and the OB department manager and supervisor for the project.
