Research Design
|
The study employed a descriptive qualitative research design. Tobiano et al., (2019) sampled nurses from ED and IPU units as research participants. Then, they informed them about the study’s purpose, seek their consent, and acquired an ethics approval form from the hospital prior to data collection. On the data collection day, Tobiano et al., (2019) employed a semi-structured interview methodology, where they interviewed two groups of the sampled IPU and ED nurses. As such, they recorded audio and took notes. The interviews were consistent and continued until data saturation occurred. Majorly, the researchers posed open-ended questions that were later guided by participant responses and changed to elicit more comprehensive details and cover the arising probes and topics. The questions asked elicited in-depth responses and enabled the interviewers to identify repeated patterns. Upon completion, the lead researcher listened to the recorded audio and filled out a contact summary form. Later, the interviews were uploaded into NVivo software where they were transcribed verbatim by a professional. They were then subjected to inductive content analysis where different codes were repeatedly read and selected to aid in clustering. Finally, the study identified, examined, and grouped relating codes together under common categories and subcategories. Later, they used the emerging and identified sub-categories to validate the findings Journal Club Template For Qualitative Research Article Assignment.

Sample Selection
|
The study sampled nurses from the ED and IPU units. It purposely selected four surgical IPUs and registered nurses who regularly work at the ED and IPU units. On the data collection day, the researchers invited all the nurses from the IPU and ED units who were on shift to participate. However, only interested ones were interviewed and informed about the study’s purpose and ethical considerations. |
Data Collection Methods
|
The study employed a semi-structured interview and note-taking data collection method. Here, the interviewers interviewed two groups each from ED and IPU units until data saturation occurred. Each group consisted of four to six participants. The interviews lasted for about a month (between January and February) and were conducted at the hospital in a space reserved for meetings. During the interviews, one researcher asked questions while the other recorded audio.
The questions posed for the interview were open-ended, consistent, elicited in-depth responses, and enabled the interviewer to identify reappearing patterns. They were guided by participant responses and restructured to elicit more comprehensive details. After the interview, the interviewer presented the recorded audios to the lead researcher who listened to them and later subjected them to transcribed verbatim.

Plans for Data Analysis
|
The researchers subjected the interviews to transcribed verbatim. They uploaded the interviews to NVivo software and analyzed them using the inductive content analysis method. The analyzed data (labeled transcripts) were first transformed into codes. Then, the codes were repeatedly read, examined, and selected iteratively by constantly referring to raw data and formulating flow charts before being classed under common headings and subcategories. Finally, the subcategories were analyzed further to determine emerging categories and validate findings Journal Club Template For Qualitative Research Article Assignment.
|
Strengths (include two strengths)
|
The research reached a saturation point, meaning the data collected is valid, credible, and can serve to confirm emerging trends and themes.
The research questions posed during interviews elicited in-depth responses and are likely to enhance trustworthiness.
|
Weaknesses (include two weaknesses)
|
The study interviewed focus groups instead of an individual. As such, its findings may fail to reflect the truth and views of individual nurses.
The research used a single data collection method (structured interviews) to develop a comprehensive understanding of phenomena (Doyle et al., 2020), hence failing to achieve triangulation and reduce bias.

Assignment: Application: Methods Used in Qualitative Research
In order to achieve credible and trustworthy results from qualitative studies, the methodology must be designed very carefully. That is, you must consider the process of conducting qualitative research to address your research question. Important considerations include selecting the research question, collecting data, engaging in data analysis and management, and selecting appropriate
interpretive techniques.
For this Assignment, be sure to view this week’s Qualitative Research Design PowerPoint webinar and pay close attention to its content on the basic elements of qualitative research methods (e.g., sample selection, data collection, plans for interpretive analysis). Then, review the two research studies presented in this week’s resources for this assignment.
Note: While not a required resource, you might find the definitions in the Encyclopedia of Nursing Research helpful for this assignment.
This assignment involves identifying and describing different elements of the research method used in the Tobiano, Ting, Ryan, Jenkinson, Scott, & Marshall (2019) article.
- Focus on the research design, sample selection, data collection methods, and plan for data analysis as discussed in the Tobiano, Ting, Ryan, Jenkinson, Scott, & Marshall (2019) article.
- Identify at least two strengths and two weaknesses of the article’s research method based on trustworthiness. You must provide support for your explanation with citations from additional sources.
- Use the Journal Club Template for Qualitative Research located in this week’s resources. Note: Assignments will not be accepted unless the required template is used.
- The template includes an area for each element discussed in the study.
- Be brief, paraphrase and summarize each of the elements clearly on the form.
