How the Rapid Strep Test is used in Healthcare

Group A streptococcus results in various conditions and complications, including throat infections, skin infections, sepsis, and toxic shock syndrome. Throat infection in adults is a primary health condition presented by adults and children in healthcare organizations. In adults, approximately 5% to 15% of cases of throat infections are reported in healthcare facilities (Banerjee and Ford, 2018). The condition is commonly associated with viral infections rather than bacterial infections. Therefore it is important to conduct an accurate and rapid diagnosis to prevent the occurrence of severe life-threatening invasive conditions. A rapid strep test is used to diagnose strep throat in adults. It involves collecting the swab from the throat and running tests on it to identify the presence of antigens of strep A. Based on the swab results, a physician can decide on the best treatment plan for a patient diagnosed with GA strep infection.

The Purpose of Rapid Strep Testing in Adults

The primary purpose of conducting the rapid strep test in adults is to help identify the presence of Group GA streptococcus, a positive gram bacteria associated with various health conditions. The common one is pharyngitis (throat infection) in adults. A positive rapid strep test confirms the presence of Group A streptococcus in adults. Consequently, when a positive diagnosis is made from the swab, a patient’s condition is detected early enough, and the correct treatment is provided. Additionally, the rapid strep test helps reduce or avoid symptoms associated with GA strep and other severe conditions, resulting in improved health outcomes for a population (Iragorri & Spackman, 2018). Implementing the right treatment plan reduces healthcare costs for the patient and the healthcare facility. If the test results are negative and the physician believes the condition might be a throat infection, a throat culture can be performed to help reach the diagnosis.

How is a Rapid Strep Test Conducted?

When an adult patient suspects the presence of strep throat, they should immediately visit the doctor. The doctor will conduct a physical assessment by looking inside the throat using a tongue depressor and a flashlight for the presence of white or yellow spots on the tonsils. Additionally, redness of the tonsils and swollen glands are symptoms associated with strep throat. After reviewing the physical signs and symptoms, the physician will conduct a rapid strep test which involves collecting a swab from the throat and tonsils. A long sterile cotton swab is inserted in the mouth and rubbed at the back of the throat and tonsils to collect a bacteria sample (Mustafa & Ghaffari, 2020). The sample then undergoes rapid tests to establish the presence of Group A streptococcus. If the results are positive, the appropriate treatment approach is provided to help improve health outcomes.

The Validity and Reliability of the Tests

The validity of a test refers to whether a test measures its purposes. The reliability of a test refers to the extent to which the same test will produce the same results if measured repeatedly. The sensitivity measures the power of a test in both its validity and reliability. From the research studies, the sensitivity values after conducting rapid strep swab range between 82% to 95% and a specificity of 97% (Gonsu et al., 2015). Therefore, the validity and reliability of the rapid strep tests are not questionable as they provide almost accurate results.

Throat infections are common in adults, and late detection may result in severe health complications. It is caused by the presence of Group A streptococcus in the body. Tests are then performed on the swab to determine the most appropriate treatment plan for the patient. Nurses must be aware of these factors in order to select the most appropriate test or tool and to accurately interpret the results.

Not only do these diagnostic tests affect adults, body measurements can provide a general picture of whether a child is receiving adequate nutrition or is at risk for health issues. These data, however, are just one aspect to be considered. Lifestyle, family history, and culture—among other factors—are also relevant. If you are assigned Assignment Option 2 (Child), consider what health issues and risks may be relevant to the child in the health example.
Based on the risks you identified, consider what further information you would need to gain a full understanding of the child’s health. Think about how you could gather this information in a sensitive fashion.
Consider how you could encourage parents or caregivers to be proactive toward the child’s health.

Welcome to Week 3!

 

This week we will be reviewing “Assessment Tools, Diagnostics, Growth, Measurement and Nutrition in Adults and Children.” You will have two assignments this week. The first assignment is a case study on assessment tools and diagnostic tests in adults and children. In this assignment you will write a 3-4-page paper in APA format on the assigned case study. You have until Day 6 of this week to submit the assignment. Please review the information on Academic Integrity within the Course Information tab.

 

The second assignment is the Health History Assessment utilizing the Digital Clinical Experience (DCE) in Shadow Health. For this assignment, you will complete the DCE orientation, Conversation Concept Lab, and the health history of Tina Jones. You have until Day 7 of Week 4 to complete this. You must achieve an 80% or better to pass this assessment and the course. You can take the assessments as many times as it takes to obtain a passing score, but it must be before the due date. The score you obtain from your assessment is combined with the documentation of the Health History.
