Advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) are equipped with advanced knowledge and skills to take up higher leadership roles in health organizations. Research and analysis, and good communication skills are key qualities that APRNs utilize to effectively manage the health organizations or departments they head (Marshall & Broome, 2020). Tess is an APRN who leads the newborn intensive care unit of Marekani hospital. For quite some time, increased incidences of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) among premature babies with very low birth weight have been recorded in the department. As the leader of the unit, Tess was concerned and took it upon herself to investigate the problem. Using her good communication skills, Tess communicated with various staff who are directly linked to the provision of health and care to the newborns. Coupled with her research skills, Tess gathered sufficient qualitative and quantitative data that directly influenced the occurrence of NEC in premature newborns. Although the infants have been fed exclusively human milk, the occurrence of NEC was still observed. In collaboration with other nurses and pediatricians, the team formed a PICOT question to establish whether a combination of exclusive human milk feeding and probiotic use was more effective than when a single intervention was applied (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2018). Led by Tess who has good research and analysis skills, the team found out that the combination of exclusive human milk feeding and prebiotic use significantly reduced the occurrence of NEC in premature infants (Sato et al., 2020). Led by Tess, the team implemented the evidence-based practice into their unit. After eight weeks, the incidences of NEC among premature infants were significantly reduced from 2.5% to 0.2% percent.
The transformational leadership competencies possessed by Tess such as strong communication skills and research analysis skills guided her to translate evidence-based practice into the clinical setting to solve a clinical problem (Tschannen et al., 2021). The result of her work in collaboration with other departmental nurses and pediatricians helped the unit and the hospital at large in fulfilling their mission.
