Applied Statistics in Healthcare

Hypothesis testing and confidence intervals are important concepts in statistics, and are useful in health care research. Hypothesis testing refers to the action of subjecting data collected on a population to analysis testing assumptions concerning the population parameters. It is applied in assessing the plausibility that the collected data from a random sample of the population conforms to the presented hypothesis. For instance, a research can present the hypothesis that school located around a lake increase the risk of intellectual and developmental disabilities then the hypothesis testing would compare intellectual and developmental disabilities incidence for schools around the lake and schools away from the lake. On the other hand, confidence interval refers to the range of values within which there is a defined level of certainty that true values lie. For instance, if the confidence interval is presented at 95%, then there would be a 95% probability that the true mean is included in the experimental mean, with a 5% probability that the true mean is not included in the experimental mean (Scott & Mazhindu, 2014). Hypothesis testing and confidence interval are similar since they apply inferential approaches based on approximated sample distributions. Confidence interval makes use of sample data that estimates the population parameter while hypothesis test makes use of sample data to test the specified hypothesis with the need for a hypothesized parameter. If the confidence interval is presented at 95% and determined to contain the hypothesized parameter, then the hypothesis test at 0.05 alpha level would almost always fail to reject the null. Similarly, if the confidence interval is presented at 95% and determined not to contain the hypothesized parameter, then the hypothesis test at 0.05 alpha level would almost always fail to reject the null hypothesis. For example, if the 95% confidence interval for the mean scores of a sample of students is 83 to 85, then a hypothesis test would be conducted if we want to know if there is evidence that the mean score is different from 86. Because 86 is outside the range of 83 to 85 presented by the 95% confidence interval, then 86 is not a reasonable estimate of the mean score with the expectation that the p value would be less than 0.05 so that the null hypothesis is rejected (Bauer, 2017). Policy/Regulation Fact Sheet For this Assignment, you will examine a recent nursing informatics-related healthcare policy and share relevant details via a fact sheet designed to inform and educate colleagues in your organization. First you want to concisely explain the policy/regulation you selected. Then you need to explain the impact of the policy/regulation on four areas: • System implementation • Clinical care • Patient/provider interactions • Workflow Finally, you will identify organizational policies and procedures that are or will be in place at your healthcare organization to address the policy/regulation you selected. Below are the instructions from Module 6. To Prepare: • Review the Resources on healthcare policy and regulatory/legislative topics related to health and nursing informatics. • Consider the role of the nurse informaticist in relation to a healthcare organization’s compliance with various policies and regulations, such as the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA). • Research and select one health or nursing informatics policy (within the past 5 years) or regulation for further study. HIPAA and the HITECH-ACT were enacted over 10 years ago, they do not meet the criteria to choose a policy/regulation that has been enacted in the last five years. The Assignment: (1 page) Create a 1-page fact sheet that your healthcare organization could hypothetically use to explain the health or nursing informatics policy/regulation you selected. Your fact sheet should address the following: • Briefly and generally explain the policy or regulation you selected. • Address the impact of the policy or regulation you selected on system implementation. • Address the impact of the policy or regulation you selected on clinical care, patient/provider interactions, and workflow. • Highlight organizational policies and procedures that are/will be in place at your healthcare organization to address the policy or regulation you selected. Be specific. As you are required to integrate references (3 outside peer reviewed articles from scholarly journals and 2 course resources) in your Fact Sheets, you can either use a regular in-text citation (author(s), date) or a numbering system. Remember to include a reference to the informatics legislation or regulation you selected. Here is a link to the Writing Center with examples of how to cite a variety sources in APA 7.
